Today the House Republicans nominated Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) for the position of Speaker of the House. A vote by the entire body will most likely occur later this week.
Steve Scalise is a conservative Republican representing the 1st Congressional district of Louisiana, which includes most of the suburbs of New Orleans, as well as a part of the city. He won his seat in 2008, and currently serves as the House Majority Leader. His previous leadership roles include majority whip and minority whip. Prior his election to Congress, Scalise served in both the state house and state senate of Louisiana.
In 2018, Scalise was critically injured by gunfire from an extreme leftwing terrorist while practicing with the House Republican baseball team. The individual, who was shot dead by police, was specifically targeting Republicans. Scalise nearly died from his wounds and spent months in recovery and rehabilitation.
He is currently undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.
