Three U.S. presidents, all founding fathers, died on the 4th of July.

In 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died within 5 hours of each other.

Both were ill and passed away at their respective homes, surrounded by family. Jefferson was 83, Adams was 90. Adams’s final words were, “Thomas Jefferson survives,” as he was unaware that the nation’s 3rd president had died just hours earlier.

James Monroe, aged 73, died on Independence Day in 1831. The only U.S. president born on the 4th of July was Calvin Coolidge in 1872.
